As the Ottauquechee River continues its northeasterly direction, it is eventually joined by the Barnard Brook coming in from the northwest. Between the two waterways, there is a piece of land that, at first glance, reveals the beauty of its green fields by illuminating the flora and fauna of Vermont.
But, according to the Woodstock Foundation’s outgoing president David Donath, there is much more to that parcel than meets the eye.
“It was a place of settlement by Native Americans, the Abenaki, along with their life patterns living in a central village, practicing hunting and gathering as they moved around, eventually engaging in agriculture as they settled,” said Donath. “But that’s only part of the story.”
