Dana Burrington

Dana Burrington, Woodstock Union High School’s class of 2016 valedictorian, is headed to McGill University in Montreal in the fall. She doesn’t know what she wants to study, but she’s practically fluent in French, having studied the language since fourth grade and she thinks she wants to study linguistics. The Vermont Standard spoke with Burrington about her love of France.

VS: You were in the French Club. What did you do with the club?

DB: I went on exchange trips to France. I did that in eighth grade and then in 10th grade that is what really sparked my love of France and my love of travel.

VS: How long were the exchange trips?

DB: Each was two weeks. We traveled to Saint-Gaudens in the south of France. It was really lovely. I stayed with two different families.

VS: Did your host families speak any English?

DB: I think they did a little. I always tell them just to speak in French. I want to practice as much as possible.

VS: You must be pretty fluent?

DB: I’d like to think so. I think I’m still I little shaky…that’s why I want to go to college and study French.

VS: What do you like about the French language?

DB: It sounds nice to my ears. I think part of it is I was in France when I was 7 months old. I was a baby so I might’ve had a little bit of influence there.

VS: Why were you in France as a baby?

DB: My parents were in France visiting my grandparents who decided to spend some time there.

VS: Anything you’ll miss about the high school?

DB: In the yearbook I was (voted) teacher’s pet. I feel like I connected with a lot of teachers, especially my French teacher and my Latin teacher. I’m definitely going to miss all the people.
