The WUHS boys basketball used a pair of big runs, one in each half, to pull
away from Otter Valley in a contest at Daily Gymnasium Wednesday night. By
defeating the Otters 70-46, the Wasps evened their season mark at 4-4.
After falling behind by seven points early in the game, the green-and-white went on an 18-3 run, ultimately building a ten-point margin in the second quarter. The visitors fought back, however, and pulled to within 35-33 early in the second half.
That’s when Hunter McDonough fueled another run. The senior guard moved to point guard tonight with Curran MacDonald nursing a sore ankle. In one sequence McDonough snared a rebound that led to a basket, hit a three-pointer and then knocked away a pass and outraced the Otters to the loose ball. He fed brother Dylan, who was fouled and went to the free throw line and hit both shots.
Outscoring the guests 13-0 Woodstock was up by 15 points and essentially never challenged again. Woodstock led by 14 points after three and just kept on the attack in the final quarter.
“It may take us 20 games, but I think we can get to where we need to be,” said
Coach Jeff Thomas after the win. “We learned a lot from the loss to Windsor two days ago. I think you can always learn more from losses than wins.”
The McDonough twins both had big games. Dylan led the team in scoring with 27 points, while Hunter was next with 19. Both also snatched 7 rebounds.Caleb Webb also had good success against the Otter zone. He scored 12 points and nabbed 15 rebounds.
Free Throws: At halftime the banner from last season’s championship was
unveiled and the players all received their championship rings. The five seniors from that team were all back in Woodstock for the ceremony. It was a special moment, but also brings closure to last season and allows this team to move forward for the rest of the season. Alex Crompton and Hunter McDonough
led the team with six assists apiece. After struggling from the free
throw stripe against Windsor, the Wasps shot a solid 15-for-19 from the line. The junior varsity team won 44-40, earning a bit of revenge for a loss to Otter Valley a week ago.
